Connecting Saia Burgess M-Bus meters to a LAN (SNMP, Modbus/TCP)

This Case study shows how to connect Saia Burgess M-Bus electricity meters to the Ethernet. You can read values remotely using SNMP or Modbus/TCP protocols. Web interface, email reporting and alarming is available. Tested with Saia Burgess ALD1D5FM one phase meter and ALE3D5FM three phase meter. HWg-PWR 25 smart gateway is used to convert M-Bus to LAN.

Technical description

  • Power consumption is measured by external 22+1 Saia Burgess M-Bus meters (EN 13757-2)
  • Each meter provides voltage, current, power factor, energy, kWh and other values
  • Electricity meters are connected by M-Bus to HWg-PWR (smart M-Bus to LAN gateway)
  • Connected M-bus meters can be identified using autodetection
  • Each HWg-PWR 3/12/25 unit provides 8 Digital Inputs for single-phase 110/230VAC outage detection
  • HWg-PWR smart M-Bus to ethernet gateway sends an alarm in the event of a failure or a value out of a specified range (E-mail, SNMP Trap, SMS over SMS GW)
  • External SMS Gateway can be connected to provide simple SMS alerting without any additional software
  • PDMS can export energy consumption to MS Excel, even every single minute
